If you thought the Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” was running out of time, as his lyrics insist, you’d be mistaken.
The massive hit has now reached yet another milestone, scoring 2.5 billion streams on Spotify and becoming the fastest song in the streaming service’s history to accomplish the feat. Chart Data revealed the achievement Monday on Twitter.
Coming off his impressive “Hurricane” feature on Kanye West’s latest No. 1 album Donda, the Weeknd’s resume of records is only growing. In August, “Blinding Lights” became the longest-charting song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, surpassing Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” which previously held the distinction with 87 weeks on the chart.
“Blinding Lights” reached another milestone earlier this year, when it became the first song in the history of the Hot 100 to spend a year in the top 10, as revealed back in March.
Despite After Hours failing to get a nod at the 2021 Grammys, the Weeknd’s continuous streak of shattering records—and the Super Bowl halftime performance that gave it some added magic—show that maybe putting numbers on the board are the most revealing award an artist can ask for.
