How Snoop Dogg Paid Tribute to His Late Mother During Super Bowl Halftime Show

Snoop’s mother Beverly Tate died at age 70 in October, and the rap legend paid tribute to her during his portion of the Super Bowl LVI halftime show.

The Dr. Dre-centric Super Bowl LVI halftime show on Sunday night was one to remember. With appearances from Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, 50 Cent, and even Anderson .Paak on drums, it catered to generations of hip-hop fans.

But for Snoop, it meant more than just the music. Fans who were paying close attention to the MC’s turn rocking the mic may have noticed a few photos sitting behind him on a wall, including the 1993 Doggystyle album cover and a visual from his “What’s My Name?” music video. One image in particular though—of him and his late mother—likely held an even more significant meaning.

Snoop’s mom Beverly Tate died at age 70 back on Oct. 24, and the rapper toasted her legacy with the mother/son shot within his Super Bowl set, the same one he posted when he announced her passing to his fans last year.

“I just lost my mom a couple of days ago,” Snoop said last year in a Breakfast Club chat. “It’s heavy on my heart but at the same time I know that these are things that she loved for me to do. To make people smile, to make people laugh, to spread joy. So the pandemic taught me to love people more, to be more up close and personal, and to be more understanding. Because there’s a lot of mental health going on. We all have it but we just ashamed to say it.”

Also during the performance, Snoop rocked a new chain featuring the cover of his most recent album B.O.D.R. (Bacc on Death Row), loaded with 250 grams of gold and over 13 carats of natural VS diamonds. But Uncle Snoop didn’t keep it to just one chain, as he also was spotted with a gold Faze Clan piece above his Death Row-nodding item.

During Snoop’s set, he ran through hits like “The Next Episode,” “Still D.R.E.,” and “California Love.” While he wasn’t seen on TV lighting anything up, he did take a pre-show hit to celebrate the momentous occasion. Check out the performance here.
