The Pittsburgh Pirates are the latest to pay tribute to the late rapper Mac Miller, honoring him with a moment of silence before a game on Monday, September 17.
Prior to their game against the Kansas City Royals, the Pirates played a video tribute to Miller made up of the Swimming rapper throwing out the first pitch at his hometown ballpark.
“Mac was a rapper, a singer, a producer and had a very bright future in the industry ahead of him,” the announcer said in a video captured by a fan at the game. “Locally, Mac is remembered as a hometown kid who sang about our city where his heart clearly remained. Our thoughts are with his parents, his grandmother and all of his family and friends who mourn his passing.”
The moment of silence and video tribute is the most recent in an outpouring of love for the rapper following his death on September 7. Everyone from Vince Staples to Fiona Apple took time out to share their memories of Miller. Mac's ex Ariana Grande has shared several remembrances of Miller, posting his songs to Instagram, and sharing a statement on his passing.
"I adored you from the day I met you when I was nineteen and I always will," she wrote in an Instagram caption. "I can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. I really can’t wrap my head around it. We talked about this. So many times. I’m so mad, I’m so sad I don’t know what to do. You were my dearest friend. For so long. Above anything else. I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix or take your pain away...I hope you’re okay now. rest."
Mac Miller, born Malcolm James McCormick, was 26.
