The 2019 BET Awards are going down tonight at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theatre. This year's edition is jettisoning a few of the quirkier categories like best verses and biggest hustlers for a more straightforward show that honors excellence in music, movies and sports.

Cardi B tops the streamlined list of nominations with 7 nods. Tyler Perry and Mary J. Blige are being honored with takes on a Lifetime Achievement Award and several categories have been opened up to fan voting. The only non-standard category from this year's show is the Bet Her award, a distillation of a former separate lady-focused awards show into a win for women-uplifting music from the likes of Janelle Monáe and H.E.R.
