The members of KATSEYE are revealing the English phrase Yoonchae can't stop saying.
The global girl group recently sat down for an interview with Australian radio station Triple J. Near the two-minute mark in the video linked here, host Tiffi asked about Yoonchae's improving English skills and if there was a phrase she had picked up from the other members that she liked to use.
Before Yoonchae could answer, Sophia jumped in with, “She says, ‘It's not that deep,’ a lot more than we thought she ever would."
Yoonchae reacted in surprise, asking, "Do I? I don't think so."
Lara then joked she had said it "like four times yesterday," including during a conversation in the car about something “sensitive.”
The discussion shifted when Tiffi asked Daniela about coming into the K-pop-inspired group without much exposure to K-pop or overall Asian pop music.
“I grew up listening to Latin music and that was my culture, so I wasn't introduced to K-pop, but as soon as I found out about it, I was like, 'Damn, like the music is fire,'” Daniela said. “I think the first group I was introduced to was BLACKPINK. I remember I did a little K-pop-like showcase and I danced to ["Boombayah"].”
She continued, “I've learned so much about that culture and so much music … and I know so much Korean now, and we've gone to Korea so many times. It's something I had no idea existed when I was a child because I was never introduced to that. But I'm so glad I was because it's so amazing.”
Daniela also shared Korean phrases she learned from Yoonchae, including "neomo mongmalla" ("I'm thirsty"), "neomu baegopa" ("I'm hungry"), "mwo meok-ji" ("What should I eat?"), and "saranghaeyo" ("I love you").
Tiffi noted that Yoonchae often says "kkamjjak" when she gets startled, while Daniela said "jinjja” (“really”) is her favorite Korean word.
KATSEYE consists of Daniela Avanzini, who is Cuban-Venezuelan-American; Lara Raj, who is Indian-American; Megan Skiendiel, who is Chinese-Singaporean and from Hawaii; Sophia Laforteza from the Philippines; and Yoonchae Jeung from South Korea. Manon Bannerman, who is Ghanaian, Italian, and Swiss, is currently on hiatus from the group.
After releasing their WILD EP on Aug. 14, the group will head out on The WILDWORLD Tour to play arenas across Europe and North America this fall.
