Daddy Yankee Warns New Artists to Get a ‘Prenup’: ‘Even if You’re Not Famous or Successful’

The reggaeton icon, whose divorce was finalized in February, shared how his breakup and legal battles changed his priorities.

Daddy Yankee says that every artist, including newcomers, should consider a prenup.

In a new interview with Leila Cobo, the 49-year-old reggaeton icon revisited the advice he once shared during Billboard’s Latin Music Week in 2021. At the time, he insisted artists make an effort to understand the business side of the music industry.

Now, in light of his conversion to Christianity, his divorce after nearly 30 years of marriage, and his current legal battles surrounding his businesses and past catalog, Yankee said he’s looking at things in a new light.

“Be on top of everything, even if you have lawyers and accountants,” the artist, now known as DY, told Cobo for the new Billboard cover story. “Now I’m alone, so I have to be 100% [involved]. Things I used to delegate, I don’t delegate anymore. It’s my responsibility, and I feel good and I feel I’ve learned so much more. You think you know everything about the music business and the rules keep changing. The smallest things can make a great difference.”

He continued, “Even if you’re not famous or successful and your career is only beginning, get married with a prenup, music is unpredictable.”

The “Gasolina” rapper also stressed the importance of boundaries and emotional health.

“It’s very important to be clear on what self-love is and establish limits—all kinds of healthy limits. Learn how to say no," he said. "I learned that we sacrifice ourselves for many people, and you do it so much that you normalize it. And that’s not the way it should be.”

Shortly after celebrating their 30th anniversary, Yankee and longtime wife Mireddys González announced they were calling it quits on Dec. 2, 2024. The former couple had been dating since they were 17 years old and share two adult children, Jesaaelys and Jeremy.

Their divorce was finalized in February 2025 after what he described as “months of trying to save [his] marriage.”

Months earlier, Yankee had filed injunctions against González and her sister for allegedly withdrawing $100 million from two of his companies, El Cartel Records and Los Cangris, without authorization. A partial court agreement later reinstated him as president of the companies, freezing $75 million in corporate funds during the transition, Billboard reported.

In March 2025, Yankee filed a $250 million lawsuit against both women, accusing them of financial mismanagement, defamation, and deleting key company records during the transition.

Daddy Yankee is set to return to the stage for his first televised performance in three years at the 2025 Billboard Latin Music Awards on Oct. 23. He will release a Christian album, Lamento En Baile (Mourning In Dancing), his first album since 2022, on Oct. 16.

ComplexCon returns to Las Vegas on October 25–26, 2025, with over 300 brands and live performances by Young Thug, YEAT & Friends, Peso Pluma, Central Cee, Ken Carson, and more. Get your tickets now.
