Things are getting messy in an ongoing dispute between singer Lola Young and producer Carter Lang.

On Friday, Oct. 3, the BBC reported that Young filed an intellectual property claim in court after Lang claimed writing credits on four of her songs. The case was filed in London this past Wednesday on behalf of Young and Sony Music Publishing.

"It is with immense disappointment,” read a statement from Young’s lawyers, especially given recent events, that we have had no choice but to respond to recent writing credit claims from Carter Lang on four Lola Young songs by issuing legal proceedings on her behalf. Carter's claims are strongly refuted and we will not allow Lola's reputation and integrity to be called into question - particularly so long after the sessions took place and agreements were put in place. Lola has always been authentic in her songwriting process and acknowledges songwriting contributions where appropriate. This dispute has been ongoing for several months and we look forward to the truth being established."

At the time of writing, Lang — who has produced and co-written songs for SZA, Justin Bieber, Post Malone, and Omar Apollo — has not commented on the matter.

The lawsuit comes shortly after Young collapsed on stage during a performance at All Things Go festival and cancelled all performances “for the foreseeable future.”

Young’s rise to fame has been a slow burn. Though she’s been putting out music since 2019, she became a viral success with her song “Messy” last year.

It’s not clear which of the songs Lang is claiming to have written, however, he is listed as a producer on “Messy,” as well as several of Young’s tracks.

Last month, Young released her third studio album I’m Only F**king Myself.
