Watch This Puerto Rican School Erupt With Joy When Power Gets Turned Back On

When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico last September, it left millions of Americans without power, including students and teachers at Academia Bautista de Puerto Nuevo school in San Juan. Now, nearly four months later—112 days to be exact—the lights are back on in the school, at least.

In a video (above) recorded shortly after electricity returned to the school, students and teachers are seen erupting in screams and cheers in the hallways and classrooms. The happy moment was posted on the school's official Facebook page. "Indisputable joy from all of us who are part of the ABPN," read the caption (translated from Spanish). "We are grateful to all the parents, students, and staff who have stayed with us and continued to support us in this situation."

The Category 4 storm landed on the island last year. So far, 64 deaths have been recorded. However, as BuzzFeed reported, the Puerto Rican government authorized the burning of dead bodies, and these people aren't being tallied into the official death toll. The New York Times estimates that over 1,000 people have died as a result of Hurricane Maria.

While the Academia Bautista de Puerto Nuevo students and staff are celebrating, 40% of the island is still without power, according to a statement from Puerto Rican Rep. Eddie Charbonier at a press conference covered by the Orlando Sentinel. In the meantime, more than 300,000 people have come stateside in Florida since Hurricane Maria hit the island.

Countless celebrities including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jennifer Lopez, Jay-Z, and Chance The Rapper have donated to help send aid to Puerto Rico.
