Indonesia Tsunami Leaves at Least 380 People Dead

More than 380 people, including at least one child, died in Indonesia after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake set off a tsunami, reports Time. Hundreds of people were reportedly injured as well and are seeking treatment at a nearby hospital, which was also damaged by the tsunami.

At the time of the disaster, "tens to hundreds" of people were at a beach festival in Palu, Indonesia, says disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Other Indonesian towns, Donggala and Mamuju, were also affected by the tsunami, but the extent of their damage has yet to be determined since the roads were damaged and telecommunications is down.

"We hope there will be international satellites crossing over Indonesia that can capture images and provide them to us so we can use the images to prepare humanitarian aid," Nugroho told Time.

A nearby prison in Palu also had more than half of their 560 inmates escape during the catastrophe, according to the prison's warden. "It was very hard for the security guards to stop the inmates from running away as they were so panicked and had to save themselves too,” he told state news agency Antara, according to Time. He added that they "don’t even think to find the inmate" and "don’t even have time yet to report this incident to our superiors."

This deadly disaster comes nearly two months after another earthquake hit Indonesia. Chrissy Teigen, who was vacationing with John Legend and their children in Bali, live-tweeted the experience.
