Students in one Texas school district who are planning to participate in the inspiring wave of protests and demonstrations in support of gun law revision will be risking suspension to do so. In an oddly angry-sounding diatribe, Needville Independent School District Superintendent Curtis Rhodes vowed to punish student protesters with a three-day suspension.
"Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative," Rhodes said Tuesday, according to the Houston Chronicle. "We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved. All will be suspended for 3 days and parent notes will not alleviate the discipline."
Rhodes added that "school is a place to learn and grow educationally, emotionally, and morally," thus he will not tolerate "a disruption." The letter was published on social media and sent to students' parents.
Multiple student-led demonstrations have been planned following the murder of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida last week. The person allegedly responsible, who's not worth mentioning by name, used an AR-15 to carry out the senseless act.
Also on Tuesday, George and Amal Clooney threw their weight behind the protests calling for sensible gun legislation. In addition to donating half a million dollars to March for Our Lives, the Clooneys will be joining in on a nationwide demonstration set for March 24. "Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School," George said. Oprah has since joined in by donating $500,000 of her own to the cause.
