No Charges to Be Filed Against Officers in Death of Korryn Gaines

No criminal charges will be filed against the cops involved in the shooting that took the life of Korryn Gaines during an incident in Baltimore County, officials announced Tuesday. A statement from attorneys obtained byWBAL-TV said a news conference was being planned for Wednesday afternoon to reveal additional details following a meeting with the Baltimore County State's Attorney.

A representative from The Gordon Law Group told WBAL-TV that their attorneys and others from Jimmy M. Bell's office would be meeting with Scott Shellenberger. The nature of the meeting, according to the statement, is "for him to advise the family that he completed his monitoring of the police investigation into the killing of Korryn Gaines and will not be filling criminal charges against any of the officers involved."

Earlier this month, Gaines' family filed a wrongful death suit against Maryland. The suit contends, according to the New York Daily News, that officers fired their weapon at Gaines because "they ran out of patience after a seven-hour standoff," not because they felt they were in danger.

The officer who fatally shot Gaines, 23, was later identified by authorities Sept. 1 as Officer First Class Ruby. Ruby was a 16-year veteran of the department and also a member of the Support Operations Division who had previously, during what WBAL-TV described as a "similar incident" in 2007, been involved with a fatal encounter.
