A 58-year-old man accused of sledgehammering a dozen police cars has been arrested for said sledgehammering of a dozen police cars.

Gregory Simpson allegedly introduced his sledgehammer to a total of 12 vehicles at Dallas Central Patrol early Sunday morning, NBC 5 reported. In a tweet Sunday, the Dallas Police Association said the destruction took place around 5 a.m. in the morning. "What's it going to take folks, Officer getting killed?" the tweet asked. "These parking lots need to be secure!" The DPA also shared photos of the smashed vehicles.

Authorities said they believe the sledgehammer-wielding Simpson was able to get onto the property by sneaking through an unlocked gate where officers and city marshals share a parking lot, WFAAreported. Of the 12 sledgehammered vehicles, eight were city marshals' vehicles and four belonged to the department. Simpson was ultimately taken into custody and held at the Lew Sterrett Jail with a bond set at $50,000 after being witnessed striking one of the vehicles. He has been charged with felony criminal mischief.

Voters in the region said yes last year to nearly $7 million going toward new security features at cop-related facilities. Following Sunday's sledehammering, the city is hoping to get moving on the installation of fresh fencing and greater gates in the months ahead.
