White Woman Slammed After Confessing She's Been Pretending to Be Black

Jessica A. Krug said in a widely shared (and equally widely criticized) Medium post on Thursday that she has built her life on "a violent anti-Black lie." Simply put, she pretended to be Black.

Krug is listed on the George Washington University site as an associate professor whose claimed "areas of expertise" included Africa, Latin America, African American History, Early Modern World, and Imperialism and Colonialism.

In the Medium piece in question, titled "The Truth and the Anti-Black Violence of My Lies," Krug—who has since been rightfully blasted across social media—confessed to having "eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City." She did so, in her own words, "to an escalating degree" by assuming various identities "within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness."

Elsewhere, Krug said she is a "culture leech" and "a coward" and called on everyone to cancel her. "And I absolutely cancel myself," she added.

Thus far, the ensuing discourse surrounding Krug's Medium post has included many calling into question the timing of its release, with some speculation from those wondering if she only did so after potentially receiving word that this would all be revealed anyway. Others have drawn connections to the way-too-fucking-long news cycle that surrounded the infamous Rachel Dolezal story out of Spokane, Washington.
