At least 43 people were killed in a tragic train collision in Greece late Tuesday night.

In an initial statement, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called the fatal crash an “unspeakable tragedy” and promised that a thorough investigation would be carried out at the federal level.

“Our duty now is to treat the wounded and be by their side. From there, one thing I can guarantee: we will find out the causes of this tragedy and do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again,” Prime Minister Mitsotakis said.

Per the latest from the Associated Press at the time of this writing, at least 43 people had been killed when a passenger train and a freight train collided due to what’s believed to have been caused by “a traffic human error.” Not long after the crash, Greece’s Transport Minister, Kostas Karamanlis, had been confirmed to have resigned “as a basic indication of respect for the memory of the people who died so unfairly.”

Meanwhile, per Reuters, a local station master has been arrested as the investigation into the exact cause of the deadly collision continues. The man has denied wrongdoing on his part and has instead pointed to a “technical failure.”
