More Than $550,000 Raised for Family of Custodian Killed in Nashville School Shooting

In the wake of the school shooting in Nashville on Monday, GoFundMe has assembled a special designated page listing all verified fundraisers.

More than $550,000 has been raised for the family of a custodian who was killed in this week’s school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mike Hill, 61, was one of six victims in the shooting at the Covenant School in the Green Hills area of the city on Monday.

“Mike was the beloved father of eight children,” the organizer of a verified GoFundMe for Hill’s family said. “More notably, he was ‘Big Mike’ to his students, who will surely feel his loss in the years to come. Per his family, he took great pleasure and found tremendous joy in his job and through those students.”

At the time of this writing, the fundraiser was nearing $380,000 after surpassing its initial goal of $25,000. Money raised, per the GoFundMe’s description, will go directly toward Hill’s family.

“Mike deserves to be remembered for his selfless act protecting our children,” the organizer, who’s in “direct communication” with the family and school officials, said.

Students Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney—all age nine—were also killed in Monday’s shooting; additional adult victims included Cynthia Peak, 61, and Katherine Koonce, 60. In the wake of the shooting, GoFundMe has put together a designated site listing verified fundraisers including the Nashville Covenant Victims’ Fund and more.

Additionally, a number of local leaders and public figures have directed their followers to the Caring for Covenant Fund from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
