'It's Not Enough': How People Are Reacting to $30,000 Payments to Delta Crash Passengers

According to Delta, the payments come with "no strings attached."

Passengers on Delta Connection Flight 4819, operated by Endeavor Air, will be receiving $30,000 each after surviving a harrowing runway accident in Toronto.

As you’ve no doubt seen by now, footage of the incident in question shows the plane, carrying 76 total passengers and four crew members, overturning upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport earlier this week. By Thursday, per a Delta statement, all 21 injured passengers had been released from local hospitals. There were no fatalities in the crash.

“The Delta and Endeavor families are grateful that all those injured Monday have been released from the hospital, and we extend our thanks to everyone who provided care to them over the past few days,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said on Thursday. “We will continue to connect one-on-one with customers, employees and loved ones as we move forward to make sure their needs are met with care.”

In light of multiple reports stating that passengers would be receiving $30,000, Complex reached out to a Delta spokesperson on Thursday. The rep confirmed the amount, saying in an email, “Delta Care Team representatives are telling customers this gesture has no strings attached and does not affect rights.” The “no strings attached” aspect of the payment has received significant attention from the public, as well as the amount itself.

Below, we take a look at some of those reactions, including a timely Kendrick Lamar quote from 360 host Speedy Morman.

News of the $30,000 payments comes amid continued coverage of the circumstances of the crash, not to mention ongoing commentary on social media about the current statute of air travel at large. 50 Cent, expectedly, is among those who have also gotten in on the discourse, including by way of an “In Da Club”-nodding meme.
