These Are Apparently the 'Best' Places to Work in 2017

Having a job is overrated.

The annual ranking of the best places to work has been unveiled, despite the fact that words like best and work are completely subjective. Somehow, Google tops the 2017 list instead of that juice bar down the street that lets you smoke in the break room.

Comparably's Mashable-spotted list ranks the companies that bagged the highest "sentiment ratings provided by employees who anonymous rated their employees" during this year's eligibility period, which kicked off Jan. 1 and wrapped Nov. 17. Google is joined in the top five by more places that would never hire me, not in a million years, including Facebook and HubSpot. Other notable appearances on this year's list are Netflix (No. 9), Amazon (No. 11), and Apple (No. 18).

Comparably has also named the "best" companies based on more specific factors, including diversity. Google, Facebook, Amazon, LinkedIn, and Nike all made the cut there.

Back in August, an ex-Google employee's unfathomably stupid anti-diversity memo made headlines. The memo included a number of inflammatory assertions, later resulting in a public response from Google saying the memo "advanced incorrect assumptions about gender" and was not representative of what the company promotes.

"Strong stands elicit strong reactions," Google's VP of Diversity, Integrity and Governance Danielle Brown later said. "Changing a culture is hard, and it's often uncomfortable. But I firmly believe Google is doing the right thing, and that's why I took this job."
