In the wake of Tuesday's horrific terrorist attacks in Brussels, leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump wasted little time tying the tragedy to the most controversial aspects of his campaign. Bernie Sanders, in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel later that day, passionately urged Americans not to flock to the "toughest" voices out of fear.
"I think people get afraid, and for good reason," Sanders told Kimmel when asked why some seem to be drawn to Trump's rhetoric in the wake of such attacks. "ISIS is a disgusting and barbaric organization." According to Sanders, many Americans' fear of an attack is relatable but shouldn't be used as a manipulation tool in undermining the Constitution.
"At the end of the day, we cannot allow the Trumps of the world to use these incidents to attack all of the Muslim people in the world," Sanders insisted. "That is unfair. To imply that if someone is a Muslim they're a terrorist? That is an outrageous statement."
Within hours of Tuesday's attacks, Trump made a series of appearances on daytime TV to once again push his troubling border policies. Trump also took his message of rampant xenophobia to Twitter, repeatedly bragging about being "right" about terrorism:
