Gearbox Software has announced a delay for Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2, citing the need for more development time and polish to ensure a high-quality experience for players.
The game was originally slated for release on October 3, with no new release date in sight. On Tuesday, September 23, the official Borderlands X account posted, "Greetings, Vault Hunters - We need to share that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed. We do not take this decision lightly, but are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development and polish time to do that."
The post continued, "We will update you all on the new release timing once we’ve fully adjusted our plans. In accordance with Nintendo’s policy, all digital pre-orders to date will be cancelled. Customers can initiate that process themselves now, or it will happen automatically starting on Friday, Sept. 26."
Gamers didn't waste any time taking to the comments on both Twitter and Reddit to share their thoughts about the delay.
"Oh man, I was looking forward to seeing how much of a train wreck this version would be," said one Redditor. Another added, "Should have never been approved for development on a Switch." Someone else said, "I played this at PAX West. It was... Rough. Like, nearly unplayable at times."
Fans were also quick to point out the irony of the game being delayed when Randy Pitchford, Gearbox's CEO, had previously appeared confident over the game's release on the Nintendo Switch. In a video shared to X in July, Pitchford gave a bit of a fake out about a delay, before boasting by saying, "but wait! There is a release date, it's October 3rd! It's not next year, it's not even the holidays, it's so much before Christmas, it's so much before Thanksgiving, it's October 3rd, you guys!"
"Wooooahh further delayed was expected but indefinite wow. What happened to Randy bragging about it lol," said one comment. Another user replied with, "Indefinite delay is wild guess all that bragging didn’t age too well…"
