Donald Trump’s return to his home borough of Queens for the U.S. Open men’s final drew a sharp response from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
On Sunday, Trump, who attended as a guest of Rolex, was shown on the Jumbotron during the national anthem, and while he stood and saluted, large sections of the audience erupted in boos. Despite the jeers, there was some scattered applause that could also be heard throughout the stadium.
The moment aired live on ABC, despite a reported request from the United States Tennis Association urging broadcasters to avoid highlighting “disruptions or reactions” to Trump’s presence.
Security was visibly heightened around the tournament, too, with traffic slowdowns and extra screening delaying the men’s championship between Italy’s Jannik Sinner and Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
The match, originally slated for 2 p.m., didn’t begin until 2:48 p.m., as long lines of fans were still waiting to enter. Trump’s appearance marked his first at the Open since 2015, when he was still a presidential candidate and was also greeted with jeers.
On Sunday, he watched the match from Rolex’s private suite, joined by family and allies including Jared Kushner, Pam Bondi, Susie Wiles, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The men’s final capped ESPN’s exclusive coverage of the 2025 U.S. Open, which wrapped up its two-week run with one of the tournament’s most politically charged moments.
