Homeless Man Shares Heartbreaking Story on Helping Kids After Manchester Attack

A homeless man was outside the arena where the Manchester bombing took place, and he told a gruesome story about the scene.

Sometimes it takes extraordinary moments of panic or danger to reveal someone's true character. In the case of one homeless man who lives in Manchester, the attack at Ariana Grande's concert Monday night seems to have been the spark that prompted him to be a hero.

In an interview with ITV News in the U.K., a man named Steve recounted the scene around Manchester Arena following the bombing, describing in horrifying detail what it was like to be there at the time of the attack.

"It was children, a lot of children with blood all over them and crying and screaming," he said. "We were having to pull nails out of their arms and stuff and a couple out of this little girl's face. Some lady, she got cut in from her side here, so my mate had to hold her legs up and then an ambulance guy came, and a fireman, and they assisted after that. We just held her legs up because we thought she was just going to bleed right out."

The mental image of a child's face embedded with nail shrapnel is heartbreaking, but if there's any solace to be taken from the story, at least people like Steve were around to help. Despite not knowing the victims, Steve claimed his response was mostly instinct.

"Just because I'm homeless doesn't mean I haven't got a heart and I'm not human still," he said. "They needed the help, I'd like to think someone would come and help me if I needed the help. It's just instinct to go and help, if someone needed your help."

Steve's sentiment is inspiring, because despite homeless people being largely ignored or looked down upon by the average passerby, his mentality doesn't appear to have changed when push came to shove. And though he may not get the help he needs in return, Steve said helping those in need was the only option for him.

"It had to be done," he said. "You had to help. If I didn't help, I wouldn't be able to live with myself for walking away and leaving kids like that."
