If you have an iPhone 6 (or plan on copping the iPhone 7 when it’s released), make sure you only get it repaired at an Apple store. A new software update is disabling iPhone 6 devices for repairs not done by Apple.
According to BBC, the issue known as "error 53" occurs when third-party fixes are detected on phones operating with the updated iOS 9 system. Apple recommends contacting their support team if this happens but even then, you may be out of luck.
Per the Guardian, Antonio Olmos took his phone in after receiving the error code but workers were unable to fix it. "When Olmos, who says he has spent thousands of pounds on Apple products over the years, took it to an Apple store in London, staff told him there was nothing they could do, and that his phone was now junk," a reporter for the paper wrote.
Additional users posted similar problems on Apple’s forums and the major tech company released a statement on the issue. "When an iPhone is serviced by an unauthorized repair provider, faulty screens or other invalid components that affect the touch ID sensor could cause the check to fail if the pairing cannot be validated. With a subsequent update or restore, additional security checks result in an 'error 53' being displayed," a spokeswoman said.
