FDA Probe Leads to Family Dollar Recalling Condoms, Pregnancy Tests, and More

Family Dollar has recalled about 40 products, ranging from pregnancy tests to condoms, in wake of the findings in a Food & Drug Administration investigation.

Family Dollar issued a voluntary recall of about 40 over-the-counter products, including pregnancy tests and condoms, last Friday.

NBC Los Angeles reports the recall came after an investigation by the Food & Drug Administration discovered these products were stored and shipped outside the required label temperature. The entire list can be seen here. Six varieties of Colgate toothpaste and mouthwash were later added. Family Dollar has not received any complaints regarding these products, but the FDA is taking action “out of an abundance of caution.”

Family Dollar employees have been instructed to pull these items from the shelves. However, customers who have these products, which were shipped to stores from May 1 to June 10, can return items where they were purchased without a receipt for a full refund.

Family Dollar locations in Arizona, California, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas and Utah were impacted by the recall.

Mike Witynski, president and CEO of Family Dollar parent company Dollar Tree, announced last month that the discount chain plans on cutting prices in an effort to meet the demand brought about by inflation. “Competitive pricing at Family Dollar will over the long term enhance our sales productivity and profitability, and ultimately our opportunity to accelerate store growth,” Witynski explained.

Family Dollar reported 95 new stores have opened during the last quarter, while another 257 locations were renovated. The company believes it’s “putting our best foot forward” through these improvements and expansion efforts, but it also works toward matching the energy of rival Dollar General, which opened 436 new stores in the same span.
