The family of a Wisconsin man and local chapters of the NAACP are seeking answers after Tory Medley was found hanging to death from a tree on a golf course in Brookfield.

Brookfield, Wisconsin, is an affluent suburb near Milwaukee. Brookfield police told Fox 6: "The preliminary investigation is indicating that the individual died by suicide. We have no information at this point to indicate a crime was involved." According to the television, Medley, 39, was found dead at Brookfield Hills Golf Course on November 13.

However, Medley's family isn't satisfied. The NAACP isn't, either.

Shena Medley, Medley's sister, wrote a lengthy statement on Facebook on November 20.

"On November 13th, life as my family knew it changed forever. My baby brother, Torrance 'Tory' Medley, was found dead in Brookfield, Wisconsin — hanging from a tree on a golf course in this exclusive enclave," she wrote.

"His death was immediately labeled a 'possible suicide' by the Brookfield Police Department, before critical questions about how he got there and what truly happened were fully examined," she added.

"Our family has been pushing for a thorough, transparent investigation from the start. In recent days, there have been developments that appear to show the department may finally be taking a closer look — and we pray this is true," added Shena.

"But I want to be clear: we expect and demand complete transparency from the Brookfield Police Department. My family deserves answers. Tory deserves answers. The community deserves answers. I will not stop asking questions until we know exactly what happened to my brother," she added.

Brookfield police wrote in a lengthy statement posted to Facebook: “At this stage of the investigation, there is no indication of foul play in Mr. Medley’s death. Other than injuries caused by asphyxiation, there were no other obvious signs of trauma to his body, and there is no evidence at the scene suggesting that any other individuals were present at the time of his death. We are also aware that Mr. Medley was experiencing mental health challenges in the days prior to his death.”

On November 28, officials with the NAACP held a news conference to raise attention to Tory's death.

"The family deserves to know what actually happens. We all know the negative relationship that Black men have with lynching in our country, and this is a big deal," said William Sulton, an attorney for the family. "The public wants to know what happened here as well. He alleged that the police "rushed to judgment" on how Medley died.

"These types of circumstances, it's extraordinarily unusual. And again, with that being the case, we want to make sure the communication is there, the respect is there," said Montre Moore with the Waukesha NAACP chapter, at the news conference. Brookfield is located in Waukesha County.

In the statement on November 23, Brookfield police said they were “aware of several speculative and inaccurate statements circulating publicly regarding the ongoing investigation into the death of Torrance Medley on November 13, 2025.”

Police wrote that they had met with Medley’s family “to provide them with an update on the status of the investigation, our findings thus far, and obtained additional specific facts from them, which investigators will follow up on.”

Brookfield police wrote that investigators are working to locate and “conduct a thorough review of surveillance video from multiple sources, including locations he frequented, businesses near the scene, as well as footage from the Milwaukee County Transit System bus routes. This process involves an extensive examination of multiple hours of video, frame by frame, to determine whether Mr. Medley appears at any point and to establish the most complete timeline possible.”

However, Shena Medley wrote: "I will not stop asking questions until we know exactly what happened to my brother. To everyone who has reached out with concern and support — thank you. We share the same questions, and once we have verified information, we will share it publicly. We also expect the Brookfield Police Department to communicate openly with the community as this moves forward."
