Logan Federico's dad wanted to make sure the world knows what happened to his daughter.

“How many of y’all have kids?” Stephen Federico said at a hearing on violent crime. “Here’s what I need you to do. When I tell you this story … think about your child.” He chastised one lawmaker for confusing his daughter with another murder victim, Iryna Zarutska.

“Think about your child coming home from a night out with friends, lying down, going to sleep, feeling somebody come into the room … and wake them," the father said, according to The New York Post, which described Logan Federico as an aspiring teacher.

"And drag her out of bed. Naked. Forced on her knees. With her hands over her head. Begging for her life. Begging for her hero. Her father. Me. That couldn’t be there," the father said.

What are the additional details of the crime?

The Columbia, South Carolina, Police Department provided a detailed chronology of the crime in a news release. The police described a horrific set of circumstances in which a repeat criminal named Alexander Dickey is accused of breaking into a random home and shooting Federico to death.

"The fatal shooting happened on the morning of May 3, 2025, in the 2700 block of Cypress Street," police wrote. According to WCCB-TV, Dickey is accused of shooting Federico in the chest during a home robbery.

"Logan was fun, fierce, and full of heart—just like her favorite Taylor Swift anthem, '22' (which she insisted was written just for her)," a GoFundMe page to help her family says.

"Logan leaves behind her brother Jacob, her loving parents, and countless people who were better for knowing her. Though she grew up in North Carolina, a small piece of her heart was always at the Jersey shore—and of course, with the Eagles (who now have the best fan watching from above)," it reads.

According to WIS-TV, Dickey's criminal history "includes nearly 40 charges in several incidents dating as far back as 2014," many on burglary accusations. Court entries from some of his past criminal cases, including some that were dismissed, are rounded up here. The father said in the hearing that Dickey allegedly has "had more than two dozen felonies on his record in South Carolina," Fox News reported.

At 11:14 a.m., a 911 call "was made regarding a stolen vehicle. At 11:15 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was made after the female victim was found deceased inside a Cypress Street home," the timeline begins.

"The death was confirmed to be a homicide after an autopsy conducted by the Richland County Coroner’s Office. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as 22-year-old Logan Federico from Waxhaw, North Carolina. She was in town visiting friends on Cypress Street," police wrote.

The police wrote that Federico was "a true victim and not an intended target."

The night before, on May 2, 2025, Federico and her friends "were out" and returned home before 3 a.m., police wrote.

"CPD Investigators believe the suspect, identified as 30-year-old Alexander Dickey, breaks into one of the Cypress Street homes and steals keys to a vehicle, and several items, including a firearm, after rummaging through one of the rooms," the news release added.

"Suspect Dickey breaks into the home next door and steals several items, including a wallet, credit cards, and debit cards. While in this residence, CPD investigators believe he then enters a room where Logan was located and fires the fatal shot," the release continued.

"Suspect Dickey drives away in the stolen vehicle to West Columbia and goes on (what’s best described as) a shopping spree with the stolen credit and debit cards at several stores," it adds. "Dickey then drives to Saluda County and attempts to make additional fraudulent purchases. The stolen vehicle will not start, leaving Dickey seemingly stranded."

Dickey called for a tow service, but police were closing in, and he fled into a wooded area, according to the release. They eventually arrested him at a home that he set on fire, police said.
