Is Walmart open or closed on Thanksgiving Day 2025?
With the Thanksgiving holiday almost here, some shoppers are wondering whether they can rush into their local Walmart for last-minute shopping needs.
The answer is no — Walmart is not open on Thanksgiving Day 2025.
The company confirmed to USA Today that all Walmart stores will be closed on Thanksgiving. However, Walmart's doors will be back open for Black Friday shopping at 6 a.m. local time on November 28, according to USA Today.
That continues a decision that Walmart's CEO announced several years ago in an effort to support Walmart employees spending more time with their families.
Walmart is not alone. Other major retailers are also closing their doors for Thanksgiving in 2025. According to USA Today, retailers that will also be closed include Best Buy, JCPenney, Macy's, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Starbucks, McDonald's, and some other restaurants have Thanksgiving hours that vary by location, the site reported.
Walmart's decision may surprise some shoppers because it's unusual for the retailer. Walmart almost never closes for holidays. The two exceptions are for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day, although the retailer often has shorter hours on Christmas Eve.
Thanksgiving in 2025 falls on Thursday, November 27.
In 2023, Walmart's CEO John Furner explained the decision in a video.
“Thanksgiving is such a special day during a very busy season. We want you to spend that day at home, with family and loved ones, whether it’s eating a great meal, watching some football, whatever your traditions are,” Furner explained in that video, which Walmart posted to its X page. “We all have so much to be thankful for.”

Walmart also announced on X that the chain will offer Black Friday deals running from November 25 to November 30 in 2025. Cyber Monday deals will be available for only one day on December 1, according to Walmart's post.
