A Texas couple was charged with child abandonment after reportedly moving out of their home and leaving a 12-year-old boy behind.

According to Law and Crime, Keven Dwayne Adams and Erica Renee Sanders were arrested on Friday (Oct. 17) after Copperas Cove police received a report that the boy came home from school to an empty apartment.

The boy notified a neighbor and returned to show them the abandonment apartment that his mother and her boyfriend had left.

When the police arrived, the boy explained that Adams and Sanders had previously shared that the family would be relocating, although the plans apparently didn't include him.

In speaking with the police, the neighbor said that the boy had been kicked out of the house before.

In the affidavit, the couple claimed that the boy's uncle would be picking him up, but when the uncle was contacted by police, he denied knowing about any plan.

Authorities said when they spoke to Adams, he "complained" about the 12-year-old. When child protective services were contacted, the couple reportedly declined to share their new address.

Adams and Sanders can now enjoy residing in custody. Per records viewed by Complex, they were charged with putting a child in danger or abandoning them without intent to return.
