For the first time, Nick Jonas is going into detail about the “frightening” premature birth of his and Priyanka Chopra’s daughter Malti.
Malti was born in January of 2022, three months before her due date. This led to some pretty scary concerns about her health.
During an interview with Jay Shetty on the Jay Shetty Podcast, Jonas opened up about the experience, how he and Chopra got through it, and how his daughter is doing today.
“She came to the world under sort of very intense circumstances, which I’ve not really talked about ever,” Jonas began.
He explained that when he and Chopra found out that their daughter would be born very prematurely, they went to the hospital right away. Malti’s birth would be an extremely harrowing experience.
“She came out [and] she was one pound, 11 ounces, and purple basically. These angels at the NICU kind of resuscitated her in that moment,” Jonas went on.
After her birth, Malti had to remain in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for three and a half months.
At the time, the hospital was still following COVID-19 precautions. This meant that only one parent could stay with Malti at the NICU at one time. Jonas and Chopra would take turns doing “12-hour shifts at the hospital” over the course of those difficult three and a half months.
During his days visiting his daughter, Jonas noted that he was surrounded by other parents who were also going through challenging times.
“I could still sort of like, smell it, you know, there’s always visceral things. It was both comforting and frightening to be there every day and to see sort of other families going through similar situations. But she fought every day for three and a half months and slowly started to gain some weight,” he recalled.
During her time in the hospital, Malti would have to undergo six life-saving blood transfusions.
Finally, Jonas and Chopra got to bring their daughter home.
Today, Malti is 4-years-old and doing well.
“Every day is a gift,” Jonas emphasized.
