Two shootings Sunday morning in the Austin, Tx. 6th street entertainment district left a woman in her 30s dead and four others injured, according to the Austin Police Department. Although news of an "active shooter" situation instantly made international headlines, the police now say the two incidents are not related.
Austin Police Chief of Staff Brian Manley described the shooter, who remains at large, as a "light-skinned black male or Hispanic male in their 20s," the Daily Dotreports.
Police received a call at 2:17 a.m. CT about a shooting at 200 East 6th Street, and about seven minutes later received another call about a shooting at 800 Trinity, which is only a five minute walk from the first location. The close proximity of the shootings and the mere minutes between calls led the Austin Police Department to tweet about an "active shooter" situation. During a press conference on Periscope, Manley told reporters, "It was a very chaotic scene—a lot of people running in different directions."
Police believe the situation began as a scuffle between two individuals that escalated quickly, prompting the suspect to fire into the crowd, but the details remain unclear.
