Bernie Sanders Says Donald Trump Won by Tapping Into the Country's 'Anger'

Bernie Sanders' rep says the campaign has "nothing polite" to say about Trump's win.

Former Democratic nominee for president Senator Bernie Sanders' campaign released a statement about Donald Trump's general election win Tuesday—after earlier in the day subscribing to the old adage "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." In the statement, Sanders said he is both prepared to work with Trump, but also prepared to oppose the president-elect should he pursue "racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies."

A spokesperson for the Sanders campaign told CNN Wednesday morning that they "have nothing polite to say right now." Early Tuesday, Sanders tweeted a video where he spoke about the "enormous consequence" of this election.

Before the results started rolling in on election day, Sanders tweeted a photo of himself filling out his ballot, writing that he hopes "we defeat Donald Trump and we defeat him badly," and included a link to iwillvote.com.

Sanders' supporters, many of whom are still embittered by Hillary Clinton's nomination, were out in force on social media, tweeting about their anger regarding Clinton's performance against Trump with the hashtag #DontBlameMeIVotedForBernie.
