A police source told the New York Daily News on Wednesday that a Muslim teen who reported being attacked by Donald Trump supporters earlier this month in NYC made up the story. The fabricated attack was preceded by an actual attack in Canada where a Muslim teen was beat with a baseball bat in a possible hate crime and ended up requiring surgery. The fabricated attack was also preceded by a California mosques being threatened by a letter sent by an anonymous self-proclaimed Trump supporter.

Yasmin Seweid, an 18-year-old Baruch College student, told detectives she lied about the story, blaming family problems. Police have charged Seweid with filing a false report.

The source said, “This isn’t something we normally like to do but she had numerous opportunities to admit nothing happened and she kept sticking by her story.” The source added, “We dedicated a lot of resources to this—and don’t get me wrong, this is what we do—but we had guys going back and forth, looking for video and witnesses. And we couldn’t find anything.”

Seweid had reported being attacked by three drunk men on the uptown 6 train Dec. 1 when she was heading home that night to New Hyde Park, Long Island. She alleged the men yelled things at her including “terrorist” and “Trump,” and yelled at her to get out of the country. Seweid even alleged the men tried pulling her hijab off and gave descriptions of her “attackers” to police.

According to police sources, Seweid’s disappearance last week only made authorities even more suspicious of the inconsistencies in her original report. Seweid was reported missing last Thursday and turned up Friday, having been at a friend’s house.
