A California company’s chocolate products were recalled after it was discovered that they contain ingredients found in sexual enhancement drugs Viagra and Cialis.
The Los Angeles Times reports that Gear Isle shelved the Gold Lion Aphrodisiac Chocolate Male Enhancement Sachet and Ilum Sex Chocolate Male Sexual Enhancement Booster after the FDA found undeclared, possibly dangerous amounts of the prescription ingredients in the products.
The two items, which were sold online in the US, had sildenafil and tadalafil, which could lead to a “life-threatening” loss in blood pressure when mingling with nitrates found in other prescription drugs, including those used for cardiac conditions.
Gear Isle sells adult novelty products for men and women, like lotions, supplements, and games. “GearIsle.com is a retailer and not the manufacturer of the products offered,” the website says.
According to the FDA, there have been no reports of customers experiencing negative side effects from Gear Isle’s chocolate. Since the recall, the company has contacted customers to request returns and issue refunds.
The FDA cautioned consumers that dietary supplements like those from Gear Isle may contain hidden drug ingredients.
“Consumers should exercise caution before purchasing these products,” the FDA’s February announcement said. “FDA is unable to test and identify all products marketed as dietary supplements that have potentially harmful hidden ingredients.”
