A commanding officer from a Brooklyn precinct reportedly tried to blackmail a hip-hop club owner for free round-trip airfare to Puerto Rico and a generator after Hurricane Maria, per the New York Post.
Sunset Park Love & Lust club owner Imran Jairam has filed a $125 million notice of claim contending that the police and State Liquor Authority consistently targeted him for inspections since the club opened in 2014. According to Jairam, the then-NYPD Deputy Inspector Emmanuel Gonzalez came to Jairam in 2017 for the free items.
The owner claims he didn’t get back in touch with Gonzalez except to connect him with a hip-hop artist—and that even as Gonzalez was extorting Jairam, his club was still getting slammed with inspections and summonses, per court papers.
Gonzalez approached Jairam after three years of “biased and selective enforcement,” the claim stated. Jairam said the actions of the police and State Liquor Authority were “designed to drive him out of business.”
NYPD Captains Endowment Association President Roy Richter asserts that Gonzalez has been unjustly blamed. “This is a crooked club looking to shift focus from their bad conduct by making spurious allegations against an outstanding commander,” Richter said.
