An ex-Secret Service Agent thinks Donald Trump’s security detail majorly screwed up on the day of the attempted assassination.
TMZ Studios released its new special, TMZ Presents: Under Fire: The Trump Assassination Attempt, where the outlet took a deeper dive into the security breaches that led to the shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The ex-agent, Richard Staropoli, told TMZ that the onus is on Trump’s security detail.
“I evaluated that event that unfolded as a total breakdown in communication, a total failure for the Secret Service, a total lack of a cohesive, coherent, and competent security plan,” Staropoli said in the doc at around the 37:15 minute mark. “It was nothing good that I have to say about how those events unfolded.”
He continued, “What went on there was pure negligence and incompetence,” explaining that he’s secured fifty to sixty sites for presidential visits both domestically and abroad, for George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, among others.
The attempted assassination took place on July 13, where the shooter—later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks—took aim at Trump, letting off eight shots from a nearby roof. Trump was only grazed on the ear, but the incident left 50-year-old Corey Comperatore dead and two others critically injured. The Secret Service returned fire, fatally shooting Crooks.
On Saturday, the FBI confirmed that Trump was struck by a bullet rather than from shrapnel. “What struck former President Trump in the ear was a bullet, whether whole or fragmented into smaller pieces, fired from the deceased subject’s rifle," the agency said, per NPR. The motive behind the assassination attempt is still unknown and is currently being investigated.
