Do you have what it takes to protect mankind from an extraterrestrial invasion? If you answered “Duh,” we recommend sending your resume to NASA.
According to Quartz, the government agency is looking to hire a planetary protection officer to help prevent alien contamination. But if you’re hoping for some Men in Black-type action, the job might not be for you. The PPO position was created shortly after the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, which set international guidelines for space exploration. Article IX of the agreement requires all nations to establish measures that will prevent “harmful contamination and also adverse changes in the environment of the Earth resulting from the introduction of extraterrestrial matter.” In other words: We have to make sure our spacecraft doesn’t accidently contaminate planets, including our own, with microbes that don’t belong there.
You can read the full job description at NASA’s website. Though the duties don’t seem that exciting, the gig pays up to $187,000 per year for three years, with the possibility of extensions. Qualified candidates must have an advanced degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics, or equivalent experience. Candidates are also required to take a drug test and could be placed on a one-year probationary period.
