Watch Obama Address the Nation After Donald Trump Is Elected President

Watch Obama address the nation after Donald Trump is elected president.

President Obama delivered his first address after Donald Trump became the president elect on Wednesday. Obama addressed a nation divided with Joe Biden at his side after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton with 279 electoral votes to her 228. His address echoed much of what what Clinton said in her concession speech—her first public address since losing the election—and encouraged Americans to remain hopeful.

Referencing a prior address to the nation, Obama reminded the nation that "regardless of whether your candidate won or lost, the sun would come up in the morning." And it did, he said. "The sun is up." Obama went on to say he spoke with Trump following the announcement that he'd won the election. Forever the picture of class, Obama added he invited Trump to come to the White House on Thursday to ensure a successful transition. Adding that he and Trump had "pretty significant differences," he added, "Ultimately, we're all on the same team."

Obama has spent recent weeks campaigning for Clinton following his formal endorsement in June. He congratulated her on her campaign and nomination. "I could not be prouder of her. She has lived an extraordinary life of public service," he said. He added, "As Secretary Clinton said this morning, fighting for what is right is worth it."
