A horrifying scene unfolded at a carnival in Saudi Arabia, reportedly injuring 23 people.
State media organization Arab News reported the ordeal happened Wednesday, July 30 at an amusement park near the city of Jeddad in the Al-Hada area of Taif.
A video, now going viral on social media, shows the ride titled 360 Big Pendulum swinging through the air before it snaps. The ride was full of passengers, who were then launched into one of the structure's poles before hitting the ground with bone-shattering force.
Bystanders watched in horror as the ride went down with an impact so extreme some of the passenger's shoes flew off. In the video, you can hear screams of both agony and fear from those who were onboard during the crash.
Reports say first responders on scene did what they could to treat those injured before some were taken to local hospitals for various levels of treatment.
It's not currently known what caused the ride's malfunction. Also unclear is the severity of the 23 who were injured in the horrific event. However, state media did report that there were no fatalities.
According to Arab News, Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, the region’s governor, immediately closed the amusement park while an investigation takes place into what caused the incident.
While these ride malfunctions do happen, it's rare to see one play out so dramatically. Earlier this year in Delhi, a woman reportedly fell to her death from a roller coaster at Fun N Food Water Park near Kapashera. It was reported the 24-year-old's seat belt malfunctioned, causing her to plummet from the ride.
Tragically, the woman was on the ride with her fiancé, who revealed the pair had just gotten engaged a few months prior, and went to the amusement park to have some fun together.
