More than 30 years after a Taco Bell location disappeared from West Seattle, residents gathered to give the restaurant an elaborate sendoff complete with bagpipes, formalwear, flowers, and a 21-bell salute. The unusual memorial, organized by Seattle artist Sunday Nobody, quickly turned into one of the city’s most talked-about viral events.

Held outside the former Taco Bell site at 5258 California Avenue, the funeral leaned fully into the absurdity of mourning a fast-food restaurant that closed decades ago. According to local station KIRO 7, attendees participated in a crying contest while others left tokens of remembrance near a custom-made headstone created for the occasion.

Photos circulating online showed mourners dressed in black suits and dresses while standing around floral arrangements honoring the long-defunct location. Even local politicians joined in on the joke, including Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck.

Rinck later acknowledged the event on Instagram, writing, “My deepest condolences to the West Seattle Taco Bell community. I stand with you during this trying time. Your grief is felt, and I share in it. May this loss be a reminder to all of us to Live Más.”

The funeral also shines a spotlight on the growing influence of Sunday Nobody, the Seattle-based meme artist and filmmaker who has built a major online following through large-scale performance stunts and surreal public art.

Earlier this year, the creator traveled to Greece to drop a bronze statue modeled after the “handsome” version of Squidward from SpongeBob SquarePants into the sea as a parody of the lost ancient Discobolus sculpture. That project cost roughly $25,000 to complete.

The Taco Bell funeral arrives just weeks after the company itself grabbed headlines for another unconventional marketing move. Earlier this year, Taco Bell announced Baja Blast-themed under-eye patches as part of its “Live Más LIVE” showcase in Hollywood, where the brand unveiled a lineup of experimental menu items, desserts, beverages, and lifestyle-inspired products.
