Google has agreed to pay $50 million to settle a sweeping racial discrimination lawsuit brought by current and former Black employees who accused the tech giant of systematically underpaying, under-leveling, and sidelining Black workers across the company. The settlement, which received final approval earlier this month after first being announced in 2025, resolves claims that the company maintained discriminatory hiring and workplace practices that harmed Black employees and applicants for years.
According to The Associated Press, the lawsuit was originally filed in 2022 by former employee April Curley, who accused Google of steering Black workers into lower-paying roles with fewer advancement opportunities while fostering what the complaint described as a racially hostile work environment.
According to the suit, Black employees who challenged those conditions allegedly faced retaliation, lower performance ratings, and limited promotion paths. Other former employees later joined the case, which ultimately became a class action.
The case added to years of public criticism surrounding diversity and inclusion efforts inside Silicon Valley’s biggest companies. Court filings alleged that when Curley joined Google in 2014, only 1.9% of the company’s more than 32,000 employees were Black.
By 2021, that number had increased to 4.4%, still well below the broader tech industry average cited in the complaint. The lawsuit also claimed that Google’s leadership ranks were only 3% Black, while technical teams were just 2.9% Black.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented the plaintiffs, called the settlement a major step toward accountability. “For far too long, Black employees in the tech industry have faced barriers that limit opportunity,” Crump said in a statement. “This settlement is a significant step toward holding one of the world’s most powerful companies accountable.”
Google, meanwhile, has denied wrongdoing and said it “strongly disagrees” with allegations that it treated employees unfairly while maintaining that it remains committed to equitable hiring and pay practices.
The complaint painted a broader picture of how race allegedly shaped workplace experiences inside Google. Plaintiffs claimed Black candidates were frequently labeled as not being “Googly” enough during hiring evaluations — language the lawsuit described as a racial dog whistle.
Former employees also alleged that Black workers were regularly “down-leveled,” meaning they were hired into positions below their experience level, which directly affected compensation, bonuses, and stock awards.
The filing additionally described incidents where Black employees were questioned by security or mistaken for support staff on Google campuses.
The lawsuit also echoed earlier controversies involving Google’s treatment of Black employees, including the highly publicized departure of prominent AI researcher Timnit Gebru in 2020 after disputes surrounding a paper examining the risks of artificial intelligence systems.
That controversy intensified scrutiny around how major tech companies handled diversity, workplace criticism, and internal dissent.
Under the settlement terms, Google did not admit liability, but the agreement includes commitments to conduct pay equity analyses, increase pay transparency and limit mandatory arbitration in employment disputes through at least August 2026.
