With more than 1,200 locations across the U.S., Firehouse Subs has built a reputation around limited-time giveaways. But the sandwich chain’s latest promotion is turning heads for one very specific reason: customers named Mike—or anything close to it—can score a free sub just by showing ID.

According to The New York Post, on May 6, the company launched a one-day promotion tied to its new Steak & Cheese Melt sandwich, offering a free medium sub to anyone whose name falls within the brand’s “Mike family.” That includes Michael, Mike, Mikey, Miguel, Michelle, Michele, Michaela, and similar variations.

Customers only need to present a valid photo ID at participating U.S. locations to redeem the offer, though the company noted that availability may vary by individual franchise operator.

The rollout immediately sparked online chatter because of one obvious detail: the campaign arrives at a moment when rival chain Jersey Mike's Subs is expanding aggressively and reportedly preparing for a public offering.

Some fans interpreted the promotion as a playful swipe at the competing sandwich giant, especially after an earlier marketing email reportedly carried the subject line, “Firehouse Subs Trolls Jersey Mike’s.”

Firehouse Subs stopped short of directly confirming that angle. “Our own president is named Mike,” communications director Mike Vizza said in a statement, referencing company president Mike Hancock. “We’ll let people enjoy the coincidence. We’re just focused on our guests and celebrating our new Steak & Cheese Melt.”

Hancock also described the promotion as “a great way” to introduce the new sandwich, which features prime rib, provolone cheese, caramelized onions, and green bell peppers.

The campaign fits into a larger pattern for Firehouse Subs, which has leaned heavily into promotional giveaways over the years. The company regularly runs its “Name of the Day” campaign, in which customers sharing a selected first name can receive a free medium sub with purchase.

The chain also offers birthday rewards through its loyalty program and has previously hosted donation-based promotions in partnership with local fire departments, including free subs in exchange for bottled water donations. In 2024, the company even ran a Leap Day-themed deal for customers whose names started with the letters L, E, A, or P.
