Florida’s reputation for wild headlines just took flight.
According to CBS News, deputies say Jason Brooks was arrested after allegedly flying a drone loaded with meth and fentanyl straight into someone else’s house in Lutz, about 15 miles north of Tampa.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the bizarre late-night incident began when a local homeowner reported a man showing up at her door asking if he could retrieve his “lost drone.”
That man was later identified as 49-year-old Brooks, who insisted his device might have crashed in the backyard. Deputies responded to the scene, and bodycam video shared by the department shows them retrieving the drone.
What they found strapped to it was less “tech hobbyist” and more “Breaking Bad cosplay”: multiple bags of methamphetamine and fentanyl, some of them even labeled with names.
Investigators say the discovery left no doubt about what the drone was carrying. Deputies confirmed the bags contained both meth and fentanyl, and the bodycam footage shows them sifting through the stash.
Brooks’ problems didn’t stop with the drugs. Deputies ran a records check and found his vehicle was unregistered, missing a tag, and that he was driving on a canceled, suspended, or revoked license.
He was arrested and booked on multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell, operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving with a revoked license.
The case also underscores a larger issue: fentanyl continues to be one of the most dangerous drugs on the street, with overdoses involving the substance fueling a nationwide crisis. Authorities in Florida have repeatedly warned about its prevalence and its role in a rising number of deaths.
