After Donald Trump suggested that he'll rename the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America," Mexico's president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo took a swipe at the incoming POTUS.
As The New York Times reported, Sheinbaum held a news conference on Wednesday to troll Trump's recent provocation.
Standing in front of a world map from 1607, which labeled most of North America as Mexican America, the Mexican president gestured to the map and smiled, "Why don't we call it Mexican America? It sounds pretty, no?"
During the conference, she also responded to Trump's assertion that Mexico is "essentially run by the cartels." When asked about the comment, she said, "With all due respect, in Mexico, the people rule." She stressed that Mexico will continue to defend its sovereignty "as a free, independent and sovereign country."
Sheinbaum added that the the country will continue to collaborate with the United States and is "very interested in stopping the entry of U.S. firearms into Mexico," stating that approximately 75% of guns seized in Mexico had been smuggled from across the border.
Trump shared his plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico earlier this week, per FOX10.
"We're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory," he said, failing to note that the Gulf of Mexico had been called as much before the U.S. was founded. "The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate."
During the same news conference, Trump said that Mexico "has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country." In the past, he has threatened to raise tariffs on imports into the country.
While Sheinbaum said that she expects to have "good relations" with Trump, the incoming POTUS has famously clashed with previous Mexican presidents.
In 2016, former Mexican President Vicente Fox offered a stern response to Trump's suggestion that Mexico would pay for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
"I'm not going to pay for that fucking wall," he said, per The Guardian. "He should pay for it. He's got the money."
