Menendez Brothers Anticipate Appeal Decision in Murder Conviction After Alleged New Evidence Surfaces

A new Netflix series from Ryan Murphy, ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,’ has renewed attention to the 1989 murder case.

A new development in the Menendez Brothers’ case suggests that freedom could be just around the corner.

Erik and Lyle Menendez are currently serving life sentences without parole for the first-degree murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989, as noted by Variety. The brothers claimed they murdered their parents out of fear their father would retaliate when they threatened to expose him for years of alleged sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. Prosecutors argued that they did it for financial gain as their father was an executive at RCA Records at the time of his death. They were handed guilty convictions in 1996.

Erik Menendez’s daughter Talia, who runs an Instagram account dedicated to updates on her father’s case, shared to her IG Stories that the brothers will receive a decision on their appeal for freedom within the next 60 days after their filing last May.

“As everyone knows, there was new evidence proving the abuse endured after decades of not being believed and that evidence had been excluded from the retrial,” Talia wrote on Instagram, as seen in screenshots circulating online.

“I'm praying the DA / judge has compassion not only for what my dad and uncle endured but also the fact that all of us family wants them home,” she added. “Almost 35 years is enough time locked away. They have spent more time incarcerated than alive in the real world. Let that sink in. Set them free!”

In a separate story, Talia continued, “I noticed a lot of DMs I'm getting being confused about what the decisions could ultimately be from the DA. Option 1) Time served & they would prepare for release Option 2) 3-5 years more Option 3) Immediately go to the parole board › not a great option & case will become political Option 4) No change. LWOP sentence still stands.”

“Praying they get time served for 35 years and are released!” she added.

Both of the brothers got married while in prison.

Ryan Murphy’s latest series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, released earlier this month renewed attention to their case.
