Man Sails With His Cat to Hawaii After Quitting His Job

Oliver Widger traded in his job for the open sea and documented the journey to millions of followers across Instagram and TikTok.

An Oregon man who traded his 9-to-5 for the open sea and brought his cat along for the ride is going viral after completing his voyage to Hawaii.

Oliver Widger, a 29-year-old who quit his job and cashed out on his retirement savings, embarked on a sailing journey from Oregon to Hawaii with his cat, Phoenix, according to the Associated Press.

He finally reached his destination on Saturday (May 24) and was welcomed at the Waikiki Yacht Club on Oahu cheering fans and Hawaii Gov. Josh Green.

Green presented Widger with a proclamation, and fans approached him afterward for photos. Widger told the crowd he was nervous and feeling “really weird,” albeit not seasick.

“I just feel like I have to, like, hold on to things to not fall over,” he said.

Widger’s journey began four years ago after he was diagnosed with Klippel-Feil syndrome, a rare spinal condition that carries the risk of paralysis, which made him reassess his life.

After realizing he didn’t like his managerial job at a tire shop, Widger quit with “no money, no plan,” $10,000 in debt, and became determined to buy a sailboat and travel the world.

He learned to sail primarily through YouTube and relocated from Portland to the Oregon coast, where he spent months refitting a $50,000 boat.

Widger’s journey to Hawaii began in late April, and he shared his adventures on TikTok and Instagram where he became a viral sensation, gaining over a million followers on each platform.

“You’re grinding at your job all day long and it doesn’t really matter how much money you make at this point, everybody’s just trying to do enough to get by and that just wears you out,” he said, per AP. “It’s just the world’s in a weird place, and I think people have seen that it’s possible to break out.”
