After an Oval Office meeting Thursday where Donald Trump allegedly said he didn’t want immigrants from “shithole countries,” he's reportedly unconcerned about what Black members of Congress think about immigration. According to the Washington Post, Trump ignored calls from Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin to listen to interests of the Congressional Black Caucus.
During the meeting, where Durbin, Republican Sen. Lindsey O. Graham, and four others tried presenting a bipartisan deal, Trump was “curt and dismissive,” according to Vice. Durbin told Trump the Black Caucus would be more willing to support the deal if protection statuses for immigrants were extended to certain countries, but “he was not making immigration policy to cater to the CBC and did not particularly care about that bloc’s demands,” the Post wrote.
From there, the meeting to discuss the possibility of a bipartisan immigration deal continued to deteriorate, but in later tweets, the President claimed that the failure to reach a DACA deal was the Democrats' fault. Trump continues to deny that he said "shithole countries."
Plainly, these details show that when considering legislation on issues regarding people of color, Trump is not interested in hearing from people of color. After news broke about his “shithole” comment, everyone from Cardi B to Hillary Clinton put Trump on blast for such a blatant display of racism. Historians have even added Trump’s remarks to a lexicon of the most racist statements in presidential history.
The fact that Trump doesn’t care about the CBC’s thoughts on immigration is no surprise, because Trump doesn’t care about black people. Period.
