Students across the country walked out of class today in solidarity with Parkland shooting survivors exactly one month after the shooting that left 17 students and teachers dead. The NRA could have put politics aside and respected the anniversary of the tragedy, but the organization instead decided to post a brutally insensitive tweet with a photo of an AR-15, the same weapon that was used by shooter Nikolas Cruz to target the students and teachers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
The tweet quickly garnered backlash from many online, including Parkland survivor Cameron Kasky.
Before posting the tweet above, the NRA shared a video that advocates for arming teachers with guns to “secure our schools and stop school violence." The tweet could be a rebuttal to the news that three students were injured by a teacher who accidentally fired their gun in a classroom on Tuesday.
The nationwide walkouts proceed the national March for Our Lives protest in Washington, D.C. on March 24 organized by Parkland students and survivors.
