A Miami man is facing two counts of first-degree murder after police say he shot and killed his girlfriend's brothers when they came to her apartment to protect her from him.
Antwan Carter, 31, allegedly opened fire on Gianni Pierre, 28, and Jaheim Pierre, 23, inside the Miami apartment at around noon on Saturday, according to the Miami Herald. Both brothers died from their wounds.
Police say the brothers went to the apartment because they wanted to check on their sister due to a "history of previous domestic violence" involving Carter, who had been dating their sister for roughly four years. A fight broke out after Jaheim argued with his sister and struck Carter, who had stepped in. Carter then left the apartment, went to his car, and returned, according to detectives.
When Carter came back, he shouted, "I bet one of you won't open up," police say. He then shot Gianni, who was sitting on a couch. Jaheim, after being shot, ran toward his sister, leaving her covered in blood, and was later found bleeding in a closet. Gianni died minutes after arriving at Jackson Memorial Hospital; Jaheim also died from his wounds.
Neighbor Gina Kirk told investigators she was woken up by the gunfire and heard five gunshots followed by a door slamming beneath her balcony, according to CBS News. Carter claimed he had left to get air and returned only to retrieve his wallet and keys, and that the brothers had "squared up with both fists in the air ready to fight again" before he fired.
After the shooting, Carter allegedly told his girlfriend, "See what you made me do." He was arrested after telling an officer, "I am the one; I have the firearm," per CBS News.
Carter appeared in court on Monday, pleaded not guilty, and faces two counts of first-degree murder, a capital felony punishable by death in Florida.
