Losing eleven games in a row is something typically reserved for the Cleveland Browns or an NBA team tanking for a generational talent.
But here are the poor New York Mets, losers of eleven straight and owners of the second-worst record in MLB despite starting the season with World Series aspirations. It’s the Mets’ longest losing streak since 2004.
They were oh-so-close to victory Sunday in Chicago, holding a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. But Mets closer Devin Williams coughed it up when Michael Conforto doubled in Scott Kingery. In the 10th, Nico Hoerner’s sacrifice fly to right plated Pete Crow-Armstrong to give Chicago a 2-1 extra innings win over the Mets.
The Mets were idle on Monday. But manager Carlos Mendoza’s club also had a day off last Thursday and then suffered their biggest blowout loss of the streak, a 12-4 defeat to the Cubs.
Will the Mets win tonight?
There could very well be a party in Queens tonight as the Mets welcome another team on a losing streak.
Minnesota’s skid isn’t nearly as bad as the Mets’, but it is certainly notable.
The Twins (11-11 record) have lost four straight, and were just swept by the Reds in Minnesota.
Minnesota will give the ball to Simeon Woods Richardson Tuesday night at Citi Field. Woods Richardson is 0-3 on the season with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP.
The 6-foot-3 righty has particularly struggled in his last two outings. He lasted just 4.0 innings against the Blue Jays on April 10, giving up 5 earned runs. He then worked 5.0 innings against the Red Sox on April 15, but gave up 10 hits and allowed 6 earned runs.
The Mets will counter tonight with Nolan McLean. McLean is 1-1 on the season with a 2.28 ERA and an 0.76 WHIP.
The 24-year-old McLean is one of the best young players in baseball and has been one of the Mets’ few bright spots in the losing streak.
McLean worked 6.1 innings on April 9 against the Diamondbacks, and allowed just 2 ER on 3 hits. He followed that up with a 7 inning outing against the Dodgers on April 14, in which he allowed just 1 ER on 2 hits.
If the Mets don’t win tonight against Minnesota, they get two more cracks at them this week. Then they start a three-game series at Citi Field with the Rockies, followed by another three-game series at Citi Field against the Nationals.
Mets odds
The Mets are -165 moneyline favorites at Fanatics Sportsbook for tonight’s game against the Twins. Minnesota is +1.5 on the run line, and it is juiced towards the Twins at -155.
The Mets’ losing streak has obviously impacted their World Series odds, but not enough to where they’re out of contention. On Opening Day, the Mets had +1200 odds to win it all. That was the third-lowest number.
At Fanatics right now, New York is +2500 to win it all. That is the ninth lowest number.
This reflects that the Mets are in no way out of it, as they began the season 7-4, and we are still only in the first month of the season.
