The Detroit Tigers have been bit by the injury bug of late, and it has clearly impacted their play as they have lost seven of their last eight games. Detroit is now 19-24 on the season. They could be getting their starting second baseman back soon, however, as Gleyber Torres is working his way back from an oblique injury. Below, we will dish out an injury update on Torres, and look at potential return dates.
When will Gleyber Torres return and be back in the Tigers lineup?
Torres was placed on the 10-day IL on May 6, retroactive to May 4, so he is eligible to return to the Tigers lineup as soon as today. It is likely that the Tigers give Torres a few extra days of rest, however, as he works his way back from a mild oblique injury.
At first it looked as though Torres would avoid an IL stint, but discomfort lingered.
“At this point it’s kind of early [in the season] and we don’t want to push too much,” Torres told Jason Beck, of MLB.com early last week. “Thankfully, it’s not really that big of a strain, so hopefully I can give it five days, not two weeks. We had the same situation last year, with my oblique.”
Torres was out exactly two weeks early in the 2025 season with a mild oblique injury. That one, at the time, seemed more severe than this one, so it is entirely possible that we could see Torres back in the Tigers lineup as early as this week.
Here is a look at the Tigers’ upcoming schedule.
- Thursday, May 14: Tigers at Mets
- Friday, May 15: Blue Jays at Tigers
- Saturday, May 16: Blue Jays at Tigers
- Sunday, May 17: Blue Jays at Tigers
- Monday, May 18: Guardians at Tigers
- Tuesday, May 19: Guardians at Tigers
- Wednesday, May 20: Guardians at Tigers
- Thursday, May 21: Guardians at Tigers
- Friday, May 22: Tigers at Orioles
Gleyber Torres stats
Torres is still rostered in 55 percent of Yahoo fantasy baseball leagues despite the injury.
His days of being a fringe AL MVP candidate and hitting over 30 home runs in a season seem to be over, but Torres has emerged as one of the more patient hitters in baseball over the past few years. He registered a career-high 85 walks last season, which was fourth best in the American League. Torres has already drawn 25 walks in just 32 games this season.
The Venezuelan is a three-time MLB All-Star, having been part of the AL roster in 2018, 2019, and 2025.
Tigers odds
The Tigers have underwhelmed so far in the 2026 MLB season as they entered the campaign with +2000 odds to win the World Series. That was the fifth-best number for any American League team.
The Tigers are currently +3250 at Fanatics Sportsbook to win the World Series, as they currently sit at the bottom of the AL Central standings with a 19-24 record.
Despite the poor play of late, Detroit is still +255 to win the division and is +155 to make the playoffs.
